Pikmin 4 Beginner Guide — First Days, Dandori, and Mistakes

Start Pikmin 4 with a clear day-one route, dandori basics, Oatchi tips, and seven common mistakes backed by official mechanics.

What is Pikmin 4 about?

You play the newest Rescue Corps recruit sent to planet PNF-404 after the S.S. Shepherd crashes. Your job is to find missing crew members, civilian castaways, and eventually Captain Olimar, while hauling treasures that yield Sparklium to repair ships and open new regions. Nintendo describes the loop as growing Pikmin from pellets, guiding them through hazards, and balancing care with risk.

The game is a real-time strategy adventure on Nintendo Switch (released July 21, 2023). You control your explorer and the Rescue Pup Oatchi directly, and you command Pikmin indirectly by throwing, whistling, and charging them.

What should you do in the first days?

The scripted opening is your mechanical tutorial. You land safely in the S.S. Beagle, meet Oatchi, rescue communications officer Collin, clear the Burrow of Beginnings, and pull Captain Shepherd out of the cave. Only after that do you reach the Rescue Command Post hub, where the partially buried Red Onion waits. Dig it out, connect it to your landing site, pluck the first Red sprout, and finish the first day by collecting three nearby treasures so the S.S. Shepherd can fly again.

From day two onward, pick one surface area per day (15 minutes on the clock) or stay in the Command Post to craft, shop, and talk to rescued characters. Priorities that stay true for the whole campaign:

  1. Sparklium from treasures — crossing thresholds unlocks new areas on the world map.
  2. Castaways and leaflings — story progression and night-expedition medicine both depend on rescues.
  3. Caves — most treasures, raw materials, and wild Pikmin live underground, and cave time runs at one-sixth surface speed.

How does dandori work in practice?

Dandori is the in-fiction idea of planning work ahead so you finish before the timer wins. Nintendo ties it to Dandori Challenges (timed treasure runs) and Dandori Battles (competitive onion scoring), but the same mindset applies to normal days.

A workable daily rhythm:

  • Scout first — use the Survey Drone or high ground to spot gates, water, fire, and carry routes before committing Pikmin.
  • Split leaders — send Oatchi with a squad to drag or fight while you solve puzzles elsewhere once his Divide and conquer orders unlock.
  • Match Pikmin to obstacles — only three types can travel with you in the field, so swap at the Onion before entering a cave with known hazards. Red handle fire starters and sizzling floors; Blue swim; Yellow reach high throws and electrical gates; Ice freeze water crossings. Details live on the all Pikmin types page.
  • Carry in chunks — partial treasure hauls still bank Sparklium; perfect days are rare with a 15-minute surface timer.

Side missions from castaways usually pay raw materials used for bridges, ladders, and gear at the Command Post lab. Accept missions that unblock routes you already planned to visit.

What do Red, Blue, and Yellow Pikmin do early?

These three cover most Terrace and Arcadia problems before you unlock exotic types.

Type Official strength (Switch base game) Early use
Red Fire-resistant; strong attackers (Nintendo store) Default combat line; only type that can carry fire starters
Blue Swim and breathe underwater (Nintendo store) Any submerged treasure path or sprinkler hazard
Yellow Shock-resistant; higher throws; fast diggers (Nintendo store) Electric gates and elevated objects

Ice Pikmin usually appear soon after in Last-Frost Cavern on Sun-Speckled Terrace (wild in the cave before their Onion appears much later in Hero’s Hideaway). Treat Ice as your fourth bench type once discovered, even if you cannot field four types at once.

What is Oatchi for?

Oatchi is a Rescue Pup who stays with you for the entire story. Nintendo highlights four roles: carry rider (you and dozens of Pikmin on his back, plus jumping), obstacle clearance (digging and smashing), fetch and drag for oversized objects, and solo squad leader when you split the party.

Training Oatchi at Captain Shepherd’s boot camp and buying pup gear at the lab directly affects night expeditions and heavy combat later. When you start spending raw materials on him, read best Oatchi upgrades for priority order.

How do days, nights, and rescue goals connect?

Surface days end when the 15-minute clock hits sunset or you choose to end early from the menu. You must return to the S.S. Beagle landing site; Nintendo warns that Pikmin left alone in the field at night are vulnerable, but any Pikmin whistled to your side (or riding Oatchi with you) are protected when darkness falls.

Between days you always return to the Rescue Command Post — no enemies, no timer. Talk to crew, craft, review your tablet logs, and decide the next landing.

Night expeditions are separate activities unlocked after Yonny (Rescue Corps doctor) joins and at least one leafling has been rescued. Yonny converts glow sap from those nights into medicine. You cannot opt into nights before that gate. Mechanics and defense tips are on the night expedition guide.

Main story rescue targets include the scattered Rescue Corps, castaways (indexed on our castaway locations list), and leaflings who need glow sap. Sparklium totals and specific crew requirements gate the final areas.

Callout stating Pikmin 4 allows only three Pikmin types in the field at once outdoors.

Which beginner mistakes hurt runs the most?

Each row below ties to a documented mechanic. Labels marked our tip are practice advice, not quoted from manuals.

  1. Leaving Pikmin stranded at sunset — Nintendo states lone Pikmin are easy prey at night; whistle them to you before the day ends.
  2. Bringing four types into one area — the official product page caps you at three active types outdoors; the fourth stays idle at the Onion.
  3. Forgetting to whistle before moving on — Pikmin finish tasks and wait where they stood; gathering them prevents accidental night losses and lets you recount the squad.
  4. Treating caves like free time — cave clocks still advance, just slowly (one-sixth speed). Deep cave chains can still push you past sunset if you dawdle.
  5. Ignoring type swaps before a gate — our tip: backtrack to the Onion for Yellow before an electric wall instead of brute-forcing with Reds.
  6. Skipping night prep once unlocked — story progression eventually expects glow sap from night expeditions; rushing surface Sparklium while ignoring Yonny stalls leafling cures.
  7. Not using Rewind Time after a wipe — Nintendo advertises Rewind Time as a same-day do-over; it beats reloading an entire evening IRL.

What we’ll update

Nothing pending as of 2026-11-03 for base-game beginner routing. After the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy release (2026-11-12), we will recheck whether new tutorial strings or mode splits change the first-day flow.

FAQ

How long is a day in Pikmin 4?
Each story day lasts 15 minutes on the surface. Time inside caves advances at one-sixth that rate, so spelunking eats less of the clock.
How many Pikmin types can I bring into an area?
You can have up to three Pikmin types outside with you at once. Extra types stay with the Onion until you swap.
When do night expeditions unlock?
After you rescue Rescue Corps doctor Yonny and have rescued at least one leafling, talk to Yonny at the Rescue Command Post to spend a day on a night expedition instead of a normal landing.
What should I do on day one?
Finish the Burrow of Beginnings, rescue Captain Shepherd, dig up the Red Onion at the Command Post, and collect the three nearby treasures that repair the S.S. Shepherd.
Can I fix a bad day without replaying from scratch?
Yes. Rewind Time lets you roll back to an earlier moment in the same day and try a different plan.
